hm2.0 connectors are used, among other things, in CompactPCI systems. This is a PICMG standard for high-end systems using 19-inch technology with a passive backplane. Thanks to their robust design and data transfer rates of up to 3.125 Gbit/s, they are suitable for demanding requirements regarding performance, robustness, and reliability. The hm2.0 connector is also increasingly being used for industrial applications, as it features a robust mating system and, with a 2 mm pitch, offers high contact density. The connector is available with 5 or 8 signal rows and 12 different pin lengths.

The IEC 61076-4-101 standard

The ept hm2.0 hard-metric connector series was developed and manufactured in accordance with the international standard IEC 61076-4-101. This ensures users a global standard for connecting printed circuit boards using high-pin-count connectors. Printed circuit boards can be easily swapped from one system to another. Key parameters such as retention, shielding, and coding remain compatible across applications.

ept hm2.0 connectors are designed with a 2 mm metric pitch. These connectors can be easily daisy-chained without interrupting the 2 mm pitch at the interfaces. This pitch arrangement offers advantages, particularly in PCB design, as no space is lost within individual connector modules.

Modules A, D, L, and M are equipped with a multi-function block. This accommodates the coding inserts specified by the standard. Molded guides ensure correct alignment of the male and female connectors relative to each other and prevent twisting before contact is made. The coding inserts are snapped into place or released using a simple insertion and extraction tool.

ept offers four different lengths for the mating side and three lengths for the mating side of the hm2.0 male connectors. The different connector lengths are necessary to ensure that certain signal or ground lines are established or disconnected first when plugging in or removing assemblies. The long connectors (11.25 mm) are primarily required for shield rows z and f.

To facilitate alignment and prevent twisting of the connectors, the insulating bodies are chamfered at the ends. These chamfers ensure precise positioning on the PCB and provide the necessary stability between modules.

To prevent PCB mix-ups, coding of the connectors is essential in a modern bus system. The option for coding is already specified in IEC 61076-4-101. So-called coding inserts can be snapped into place by hand in the multifunction block of connector types A, D, L, and M. The various inserts are color-coded and can therefore be quickly identified visually.

hm2.0 System Modularity

ept hm2.0 modules offer a number of options for optimizing high contact densities, particularly when combined with coaxial or fiber-optic connections. Using the Type A module, connector assemblies up to any desired
total length can be created in 25-mm increments, starting from a length of 50 mm.
Connectors with a multifunction block (Types A, M, L) are preferably arranged at the beginning of a connector row. Type B modules, on the other hand, are only arranged between other modules.
The 25 mm Type C and N modules are arranged at the end of a connector row due to their reverse polarity protection. Correct module assembly is ensured by the coding inserts in the multifunction block and by Type C and N modules.

hm2.0 for high-speed applications

ept's hm2.0 connectors enable high-speed applications. Under the conditions described below, data transfer rates of up to 3.125 Gbit/s have been demonstrated.
  • Two pairs of hm2.0 connectors from ept
  • Two standard FR4 boards, 1.6 mm thick with a trace length of 115 mm
  • One standard FR4 backplane, 4.4 mm thick with a trace length of 400 mm
  • Special attention to connection failures, skin effect, and dielectric losses during application design

No, unfortunately that’s not possible. However, we’ve found another solution for this. The straight connector strips are also available with long pins. This means that after the insertion process, a shroud is pressed onto the back of the backplane. This allows so-called “rear transition boards” to be connected from the back as well.
