PC/104, PC/104-Plus
PC/104 and PC/104-Plus are standards for Computer-on-Modules (CoM) used in industrial computers. Unlike other common form factors, these modules are stacked, allowing for the creation of complex computing systems. PC/104 and PC/104-Plus deliver full hardware and software compatibility in an extremely small form factor (96 mm x 90 mm) with a standardized bus system (ISA). Thanks to this standardization, different PC/104 cards can be combined to fulfill specific application requirements.

The PC/104 and PC/104-Plus Standards

Due to increasingly powerful components, it became necessary to expand the PC/104 system with a faster bus system. For this reason, the PCI bus was added to the PC/104 system. This addition was referred to as the PC/104-Plus specification.
PC/104 and PC/104-Plus Connectors
While the PC/104 bus consists of two connectors that can be arranged in parallel, with 40 and 64 pins and a pitch of 2.54 mm, the PC/104-Plus already offers 120 pins spaced 2.00 mm apart in four rows.
By using connectors with a transfer zone (long pins) in a press-fit design, multiple boards can be conveniently stacked on top of each other (see figure). The spacing specified by the PC/104 Consortium is maintained through the use of spacers and shrouds.
The additional use of spacer bolts is therefore no longer necessary.

Developer's perspective
"ept connectors are characterized by the highest stamping quality, which is particularly evident in the clean embossing of the contact pins. The build quality and available grade options ensure a high number of mating cycles. ept PC/104 and PC/104-Plus connectors are shipped with the well-known and proven Tcom press® insertion zone, thereby ensuring maximum reliability in all conceivable applications.
The ribbon cables are pressed into this connector using a simple flat-plate press-fit tool. This eliminates the costs of time-consuming manual soldering and prevents the need for rework on the transfer pins. (Solder bridges, tin splatters) When crimping the ribbon cables with transfer posts, a guide body is pushed on from below to stabilize the transfer posts. It also serves as a spacer, ensuring that the 0.6" spacing is maintained when the modules are mated."
