Connectors that fulfill today’s IEC 60603-2 (previously known as DIN 41612) have been in use for more than 50 years. And with good reason. Developments and standardization have changed and evolved over time, so that new applications are still compatible with tried-and-tested DIN connectors.

In addition to soldering and wire-wrap technology, ept offers you the option of receiving the connector family in the Tcom press® press-fit system developed by ept. The DIN 41612/IEC 60603-2 product series consists of 12 basic types and other supplementary versions with a 2.54-mm or 5.08-mm pitch. The choices range from signal connectors with a current rating of up to 1.5 A to power connectors that can handle up to 5.6 A or even 15 A per pin. The wealth of variants makes it possible to use this family of connectors for a very wide range of applications. Standardization ensures that the connectors are compatible with products from different manufacturers.

DIN connectors continue to enjoy widespread usage, in particular in industrial applications. For example, the VME bus, which has been on the market for more than 35 years, relies on DIN connectors. It has managed to secure a very good position in the industrial computer and is also used in new developments. The variety of different types and termination technologies (press-fit, dip soldering, manual soldering, wrapping, crimping, THR) for DIN connectors cover a wide range of applications. In view of the increasing miniaturization of components and higher component density on printed circuit boards, the use of solderless press-fit technology is increasing. Press-fit connections are created by pressing a connector pin into a contacted PCB hole. The contacting facilitates an electrical connection between opposite layers of the circuit board. To do this, a hole is drilled through the board
and copper is applied as the carrier material.

Contacting takes place using a defined and controlled force – an enormous advantage for consistent quality and fast, problem-free processing. What makes this particularly special is that the press-fit pin has a larger diagonal than the diameter of the PCB hole. The flexibility is in the press-in zone.
Press-in tools allow several connectors to be pressed in at the same time. In contrast to soldering, the PCBs are not thermally stressed. A gas-tight, durable, mechanically and electrically conductive connection with low contact resistance is created between the press-fit pin and the hole wall.

The press-fit technique has many advantages over the soldering technique. There are good reasons as to why it is still considered an innovative and reliable solution in connection technology.

Leading and Lagging Contacts

The DIN 41612/IEC 60603-2 connector family consists of 12 basic designs with supplementary variants. For DIN connectors types B, C, Q, R, and D, 0.8 mm or 1.0 mm leading male contacts can be loaded into any position in rows a, b, c, d, and e. Leads of 1.3 mm are possible for types F and G.

Why use a leading or lagging contact?
Leading and lagging contacts are employed in electrical engineering to prevent voltage spikes, which can result in overvoltage. The connection is made and broken using these contacts in the first or final step.

Do you need a connector with leading or lagging contacts?
No problem. We can supply you with special assemblies for DIN types B, C, R, D, E, F and G. The leading contact can be inserted at any desired position.

How are DIN connectors processed?

With termination technology, press-fit or soldering technology as well as through-hole technology, a FASTON connection, or insulation displacement connectors (IDC).

What currents are possible using DIN connectors?

The choices range from signal connectors with a current rating of up to 1.5 A to power connectors that can handle up to 5.6 A or even 15 A per pin.

Are the DIN connectors RoHS-compliant?

Yes, all DIN connectors are RoHS-compliant.

What are the offset tolerances for DIN connectors when being plugged?

DIN connectors feature high offset tolerances. The permissible center offset tolerance when connecting a male to a female is 1 mm along both the longitudinal and the transversal axis. The tolerance for angular inclination is 4° longitudinally and 2° transversally.
